Caritatis studium is an encyclical from Pope Leo XIII. , published on July 25, 1898, and is subtitled: "On the Church in Scotland ". With this encyclical the Pope addresses the Bishops of Scotland.

  • He welcomed the Scottish people as faithful Catholics and extolled the Christianization of Scotland, which began more than 900 years earlier. He recalled the accomplishments of the missionaries who served in Scotland and the rest of Europe. Now, however, a time has broken out in which the true faith must be defended, because there are efforts in Scotland which publicly mocked Catholic doctrine . He refers to the apostles' mandate, which is: "Go out into the whole world and preach the gospel to all creatures (Mk 16.15)."
  • For the Pope it is primarily a matter of bringing the true meaning of the Holy Scriptures to the people . He opposes false interpretations and discussions of the Bible and warns against controversy among people. In the rest of the text he encourages the priests and bishops to continue to defend the true faith and to keep the regulations, so it is very helpful to support the formation of the youth and to promote the families.
