The encyclical Octobri mense (The Month of October) “On the Marian Rosary ” was published on September 22, 1891 by Pope Leo XIII. released.

The month of the rosary

Again in October, the month of the Rosary, he praises the rosary as a prayer of love and as a refuge from the evil of the world, which continues to lead to difficult times. That is why he again admonishes and encourages ( exhorts ) to observe the rose devotion with reverence and through her to address the intercessions to the Blessed Mother . The Pope laments the evils in this world, which are unjustified and dangerous criticism against the Church. The prevailing violence, which from a divine point of view cannot be tolerated, must come to an end.

All of this is nothing new for the church , which is constantly exposed to hostility and threats, it is the spread of "wrong errors" that causes great sorrow in him. Therefore it is necessary that the believers persevere in constant prayer. In this encyclical he also refers to what has already been said in “ Supremi apostolatus officio ” of September 1, 1883 and “ Superiore anno ” of August 30, 1884. It is important to the Pope that the rosary and devotions are not only performed in one's own home but would be shown publicly.

The various ways of worshiping the Blessed Mother have already been realized in a high form and the rosary should be mentioned as an advantage of all prayers. Not only the spirit of prayer but also repentance must be implored from God . Prayer causes the soul to be sustained, while repentance leads to self-control. It is these virtues that would be inseparably connected; they support one another and strive for one goal, namely, elevation to God.
