Nobilissima Gallorum gens

Nobilissima Gallorum gens ("the excellent nation of the French") is the title of an encyclical by Pope Leo XIII. It was published on February 8, 1884 and deals with the religious question in France.

Reconciliation proposals

Pope Leo XIII. In this encyclical he described how the principles of reconciliation between church and state should be shaped in modern society in France . He describes the loyalty and close connection of the French church to the Holy See and records the dangers that would result from the separation of state and church.

He also cited the situations in Italy , Spain and Ireland and said that he intended to improve relations with European countries. The starting point for all these endeavors are the families in which the Christian life is to be exemplified, because then faith and morality would pass to the nation .

School and education

As the guardian of the faith, the Church insists that the power of the transmission of the faith and the truth lie in schools and in the upbringing of children. Leo XIII. offers the French nation and the government his and also the collaboration of the French clergy so that the tradition of the faith can be continued in France. In order to achieve a long lasting peace, cooperation with the clergy and suitable lay people was of great importance.

Regarding freedom of expression, freedom of the press and the speeches of the scholars, the Pope adds that they must not deny the presence of God and defame the Catholic Christians. All in all, he tries to get through his predecessor Pope Pius IX. to mitigate the separation of church and state that has begun. He seeks contact with the rulers in France and suggests renewed collaboration with the Holy See.
