Urbanitatis veteris

Urbanitatis veteris is an encyclical of Pope Leo XIII. of November 20, 1901, he addresses the Archbishop and Bishops of the Latin Church in Greece and takes a position on the “establishment of a seminary in Athens”.

After the founding of a college near Athens in which Catholic young men should learn the Greek language, Pope Leo XIII approved. the request of the Latin episcopate in Greece to found a seminary in Athens , in which only young clergy , of Greek origin and other eastern states, should learn the Latin rite .

The Pope also promises that a more precise procedure would be communicated in another letter, furthermore he assures active support and refers to the benevolent recognition of Greek history by his predecessors.
