Jacob Brønnum Scavenius Estrup (born April 6, 1825 in Sorø , † December 24, 1913 ) was a Danish politician , Prime Minister from 1875 to 1894.

Life

Estrup's father was the landowner Hector Frederic Janson Estrup. In 1846 he bequeathed the Kongsdal estate to him in what was then the Holbæk office . In 1852 Estrup bought Skafføgård in what was then Randers' office . As Minister of the Interior in the Frijs cabinet , Estrup took control of the Jutland and Funen rail network , which had passed to the British consortium Peto, Brassey and Betts in 1861 . He built new lines from Skanderborg to Silkeborg and Vestjyske længdebane along the west coast from Jutland to Esbjerg , which earned him the nickname of Minister of Railways . He took care of the expansion of the Esbjerg port, which became an important export center. In 1869 he had to retire from all offices for health reasons.

In 1875 Estrup Christen succeeded Andreas Fonnesbech as prime minister and formed the cabinet named after him, in which he also took over the office of finance minister . This office was of particular importance because Denmark was economically depressed after the German-Danish War . In 1877 he could not get through the budget presented by him in the Folketing , as required by the Danish constitution , and put it on the road as a "provisional", which was repeated in the years 1885 and 1894, which is why this period is referred to as provisional . He was thereby u. a. fought by the chairmen of the Venstre party Christen Berg and Viggo Hørup .

After a failed assassination attempt on him on October 21, 1885, Estrup tightened control of the press, restricted the right to own weapons and expanded the powers of the police .

In 1894 the Venstre and Højre parties jointly decided on the budget, after which Estrup resigned. He then no longer performed government duties, but still had a great influence on the subsequent Højre governments.

Estrup had been a Knight of the Elephant Order since 1878 .
