Christian Albrecht Bluhme (born December 27, 1794 in Copenhagen ; † December 10, 1866 there ) was a Danish statesman . He was the second and tenth Prime Minister of Denmark and as such headed the Bluhme I and Bluhme II cabinets .

Life

After completing his legal studies, Bluhme worked at the court in Copenhagen and was employed in the administration of the East Indian colonies in 1824. After his return in 1831 he was appointed bailiff and in 1843 director of the General Customs Chamber. On March 24, 1848, during the March Revolution , he took over the Ministry of Commerce, resigned with his colleagues on November 15, but stayed close to the king, who had come to appreciate his energy and business fluency.

On May 19, 1851 he was reappointed to the Ministry, took over the presidency of the same on January 27, 1852 and in April 1853 the Foreign Ministry in the Ministry of Örsted. He succeeded in bringing the question of the Elbe Duchies through the London Treaty of 1852 to a decision in a way that was favorable to Denmark .

During the Crimean War he declared himself to be unconditionally neutral in Denmark and took comprehensive defense measures to maintain it. Since he had done this without first consulting the Reichsrat, after his resignation (December 1854) he and his colleagues were charged with arbitrarily exceeding the financial budget, but acquitted by the Reichsgericht on July 26, 1856.

In 1857 he brought the negotiations on the replacement of the sound tariff to a favorable conclusion for Denmark. In the Danish Reichsrat he was a champion of the state party, vigorously opposed the Eider Danes and was therefore called again in 1864 to head foreign affairs and to preside over the Council of Ministers after the unfortunate outcome of the German-Danish War and the resignation of the Monrad Ministry. He concluded the Peace of Vienna and defended it in the Imperial Council. However, since he was unable to come to an agreement with the Reichsrat on the constitutional revision, he withdrew from all public activities in October 1865. He died on December 10, 1866.
