Knud Børge Andersen

Knud Børge Andersen (born December 1, 1914 in Copenhagen ; † March 23, 1984 ibid) was a Danish social democratic politician .

Studies and professional activities

After studying political science, Andersen worked as a journalist on state radio from 1935 to 1950. There he was head of the program department from 1948 to 1950. Then he was director of the adult education center in Roskilde until 1957 . He was later chairman of the social democratic teachers' association AOF from 1962 to 1964 . In addition, he worked temporarily as an editor of the social democratic party newspaper "Verdens Gang".

Political career

In 1957 he was elected to parliament ( Folketing ) for the first time and represented the interests of the Social Democratic Party ( Socialdemokraterne ) there until 1970 and then again from 1973 to 1981 . From January 1963 to September 1964 he was also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe .

From 1964 to 1968 he was Minister of Education in Jens Otto Krag's cabinet . From October 11, 1971 to December 19, 1973 he was Foreign Minister in the cabinets of Krag and Anker Jørgensen for the first time . During this term of office, during a meeting of the North Atlantic Council in December 1972 , he drew fierce criticism from the British and US Foreign Ministers, Alec Douglas-Home and William P. Rogers, and NATO Secretary - General Joseph Luns , as Denmark at the time of armament other NATO member states cut their defense budgets by eight percent.

From February 13, 1975 to July 1, 1978 he was again Foreign Minister in Jørgensen's cabinet. During this time he was also President of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 1978 .
