Johan Henrik Deuntzer (born May 20, 1845 in Copenhagen , † November 16, 1918 in Charlottenlund ) was a Danish legal scholar , politician and Prime Minister .

Professional career

After attending school, he studied law from 1862 to 1867. After graduation he stayed at the university and was appointed to the chair of private and procedural law at the University of Copenhagen in 1872 .

In addition to his professorship, he has also worked several times as legal advisor and negotiator for the government. For these activities he received an honorary doctorate in 1894.

As early as 1882 he became a board member and in 1896 director of the fire insurance Nyt dansk brandforsikringselskab . In 1897 he joined the board of the newly founded East Asia Society .

In 1911 he received an honorary doctorate from the Law Faculty of the University of Oslo .

Political career

Prime Minister 1901–1905

Deuntzer, who initially belonged to the Liberal Party ( Venstre ), began his political career on July 24, 1901 when he was led by King Christian IX. was appointed Prime Minister ( Konseilspræsident ) . In his government, which lasted until January 15, 1905, he also assumed the office of Foreign Minister. As such, he was a negotiator in negotiations for the sale of the Danish West Indies to the United States . However, it did not go on sale until 1917 because the United States needed a naval base in the area during World War I and acquired the islands for $ 25 million .

As Prime Minister he was replaced on January 15, 1905 by Minister of Education Jens Christian Christensen .

Member of Parliament 1902–1918

In 1902 Deutzner was elected for the first time as a member of the parliament ( Folketing ), to which he belonged until 1913. He was one of the founding members of the radicals that split from Venstre in 1905.

In 1914 he was appointed a member of the House of Lords ( Landsting ), to which he belonged until his death.
