Henri Konow (born February 7, 1862 in Copenhagen , † January 18, 1939 ibid) was a Danish Vice Admiral and the last Governor General in the Danish West Indies . In the executive government of Liebe , he was Foreign and Defense Minister for six days .

Life

Konow was born in 1862 as the son of the consul and shipowner Hans Jacob Hesselberg Konow (1824–97) and his wife Ida Marie Konow (1836–98), née West. On October 21, 1892 he married Jacobine Cathrine Margrethe Worsaae (* September 28, 1869 - June 17, 1951), daughter of the museum director and chamberlain JJA Worsaae (1821-1885) and Jacobine S. Grevenkop-Castenschiold (1838-1910).

Konow began his military career in 1879 as a cadet in the Danish Navy . In 1883 Konow was appointed second lieutenant and in 1884 prime lieutenant . During this time he served in the West Indies on the Corvette Dagmar . From July 26, 1886 to December 19, 1889, he served in the French Navy in the Mediterranean and East Asian waters. From 1891 to 1893 he was back on the cadet ship Dagmar . In 1897 he was first officer on the cruiser Hekla . In 1898 he was the leader of the training ship Georg Stage . From May 9, 1899 to October 17, 1899 he was the boss of the torpedo boat Springeren , which served as a fishing inspection boat off Skagen . After that he was head of the area survey boat Krieger until 1900 , which was used to inspect the fishermen off Skagen, and in 1900 he was the royal commissioner for setting fishing limits in Heils Minde. On March 29, 1900 he was appointed captain. From November 19, 1900 to March 14, 1901 he was the boss of the gunboat Guldborgsund . Then he was with the cruiser Valkyrien in West India until 1902 . In the same year he served on the ironclad Odin . Until 1904 he had successive commands over the torpedo boats Søløven , Havørnen and Havhesten . In 1905 he was head of the Falster gunboat , a training ship for conscripted machinists. In 1906 and 1907 he led area surveys in Danish waters. In 1908 he was first officer of the armored ship Herluf Trolle . From the same year until 1910 he was chief of the schooner Ingolf in the West Indies. On June 26, 1910, he was appointed Kommandør . In the same year he was also chief of the watch ship Sjælland , a barracks ship near Copenhagen. Then he was in command of the Søværnets barracks until 1911 and in the same year again head of Ingolf . From October 1, 1911 to 1915, he was head of the Ingeniørelevskolen. In 1912 he was chief of the cruiser and cadet ship Heimdal . In 1913 he was chief of staff in the squadron. In 1914 and 1915 he was head of the Herluf trolls , then he was head of the Valkyrien until 1917 . From October 3, 1916 to March 31, 1917 he was Governor General of the Danish West Indies until the surrender to the United States. He carried out the sale "with so much tact and skill that even the opponents of the sale could be satisfied with the sale."

From September 1, 1917 to September 15, 1918 he was chief of the second squadron, from September 28 to November 27, 1918 of the first squadron. In 1919 and 1920 he was chairman of a naval commission sent abroad. From March 30th to April 5th, 1920 he was foreign and defense minister in the Liebe cabinet , which was appointed by King Christian X during the Easter Crisis . On October 15, 1920 he was simultaneously appointed rear admiral and head of the war yard, on April 1, 1923 he was appointed vice admiral and naval inspector, which he held until his departure on February 7, 1927.

Konow is buried in the Beldringe cemetery.
