Hans Nicolai Thestrup (born October 1, 1794 in Vejlø , † May 12, 1879 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish army officer and minister.

Origin and family

Thestrup's father was the cavalry officer, most recently Rittmeister , Schack Thestrup (1764–1850), his mother was his wife Birgitte, nee. Hersom (1768-1844). On December 11, 1821, he married Charlotte Louise Sophie Wesenberg (1799–1881), daughter of the surveyor and businessman Ernst Bogislaw Wesenberg (1769–1838) and his wife Albertine Marie Kirstine, née. Sadolin (1773-1833).

Career

Already at the age of five Thestrup was enrolled as a volunteer in the Landkadetakademi , in 1805 he received the rank of cadet , in 1811 he became a cadet corporal . In the same year he was assigned to the infantry and took part in the Sixth Coalition War in 1813 . Also in 1813 he became a prime lieutenant and served in the occupation corps in France from 1815 to 1818. In 1827 he became a staff member and in 1839 a real captain. In 1842 Thestrup became major , and in May 1848 a lieutenant colonel and battalion commander. All these years he stayed with the same department, the 2nd Jutian body regiment, the later 9th Battalion, which was regarded as the model department. In 1849 he was meanwhile brigade commander with the character of a colonel and received the corresponding rank in the summer. In 1852 he was appointed major general. In 1856 he left his brigade and became a member of the Advisory Committee of the War Department.

In the Rotwitt cabinet , Thestrup took over the post of War and Navy Minister . In the subsequent Cabinet Hall II , Rear Admiral Steen Andersen Bille took over the Ministry of the Navy. Thestrup kept the War Ministry, but gave it to Colonel Carl Lundbye , from whom he had also taken it over, before the end of the government . With his departure from the War Ministry, Thestrup received the rank of lieutenant general . In the German-Danish War he took over a short command and in 1864 retired from military service.

Awards

In 1840 Thestrup was made a knight of the Dannebrog Order , in 1848 a Dannebrogmann , and in 1850 a commander; In 1862 he received the Grand Cross .
