Gustav Schnack

Johan Gustav Frederik Schnack (born December 14, 1839 in Mallingsminde near Ringsted, † June 7, 1920 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish artillery officer , most recently in the rank of colonel , and minister of war .

Origin and family

Schnack's father was the large farmer Otto Diederich Schnack (1791–1861), his mother was his wife Sophie Elisabeth, nee. Hellmers (1811-1897). On May 29, 1867 Gustav Schnack married in Oldenburg Julie Louise Clara Tenge (1840–1876), daughter of the President of the Grand Ducal Oldenburg Appeal Council Georg Wilhelm Christian Tenge (1797–1868) and his wife Wilhelmine Sophie Therese, née. von Harten (1806–1888). Due to the early death of his wife, Schnack married Mathilde Elise Henriette Groninger (1841–1935), daughter of the doctor Carl Gerhard G. (1804–1893) and his wife Bertha Juliane Friederike, born on September 30, 1880 in Brake. Meyer (1811-1843).

Life

In 1858 Schnack passed his Abitur at the Sorø Akademi and attended the Royal Military College from 1861 to 1866 , but in 1864 his training at the college was suspended because he took part in the defense of Fredericia . In 1867 Schnack became a prime lieutenant and served in the artillery staff from 1872 and then for a few years in the arts and field artillery. From 1874 Schnack was a teacher at the officers' school and was appointed captain of the battery in 1879 . 1882 to 1884 head of the artillery shooting school and member of various artillery commissions. From 1886 to 1896 he was head of the 2nd Department of the War Ministry and was involved in the planning and implementation of the fortification of Copenhagen ; He was also involved in the negotiations between the Danish state and the municipality of Copenhagen about the use of the western municipal meadows for the Rigshospitalet and barracks for the Gardehusarregimentet and the Ingeniørregimentet . On April 25, 1896, Schnack took over the War Ministry in the Reedtz-Thott Højre government from Christian Albert Frederich Thomsen . He held the office until the resignation of the government on April 23, 1897. On August 28, 1899, he took over the department as the successor to Christian Frederik Frands Elias Tuxens in the Hørring cabinet , also provided by Højre. He also held the post of Minister of War in the last Højre government, the Sehested cabinet, until July 24, 1901. After his departure as minister, Schnack became a representative of the Krupp arms factories and thus broker for new field guns.

Schnack translated several of Fritz Reuter's works into Danish .
