Svend Cedergreen Bech

Svend Cedergreen Bech (born January 6, 1920 - April 13, 2007 ) was a Danish historian and writer who received the Søren Gyldendal Prize in 1982 and was best known as the editor of the 16-volume Dansk biografisk leksikon .

Life

After attending school, Cedergreen Bech began studying history and the Danish language at the University of Copenhagen in 1949 and graduated in 1959 with a master's degree . In 1960 he made his literary debut with En verden i udvikling , in which he dealt with the economic and political situation in a developing country . The book was published with the support of UNESCO by the independent development aid organization Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke (MS).

In the Politikens Danmarkshistorie published between 1963 and 1965, he was the author of volumes 6 and 9, on the one hand with the Renaissance ( Danmarks historie. Vol 6, Reformation og Renæssance, 1533-1596 ) and on the other with the Enlightenment ( Danmarks historie. Bd 9, Oplysning og tolerance, 1721-1784 ). In 1967 he was editor of Københavns historie gennem 800 år and was also the author of the third volume of Københavns historie entitled Storhandelens by 1720-1830 . In 1972 he published Struensee og hans tid , a biography of Johann Friedrich Struensee , the German doctor and minister at the Danish royal court at the time of the Enlightenment. 1975 appeared with Brev fra Dorothea: af Charlotta Dorothea Biehl's historiske breve (1975) a book about the correspondence of the writer Charlotta Dorothea Biehl .

He was best known as the editor of the third edition of the 16-volume Dansk biografisk leksikon , which appeared between 1979 and 1984. In 1982 he and the historian Erik Kjersgaard were awarded the Søren Gyldendal Prize for this work in particular .
