Niels Frederik Ravn
Niels Frederik Ravn (born June 18, 1826 in Copenhagen , † June 12, 1910 ) was a Danish vice admiral and politician. In this capacity he was Minister of the Kingdom of Denmark several times from 1870 to 1900.
Life
- origin
Ravn was born in 1826 as the son of the linen dealer Stephen Ravn and his wife Marie, b. Born Bünge.
- Military career
In 1838 Ravn became a cadet and in 1845 a second lieutenant , dated back to 1844. From 1845 to 1847 he participated in Steen Andersen Bille's circumnavigation on the Corvette Galathea . During the Schleswig-Holstein uprising he served on the frigate Havfruen in 1848 , on the frigate Thetis in 1849 and on the corvette Najaden in 1850 . In 1851 he became a prime lieutenant and until 1863 was a mathematics teacher at the Naval Cadet Academy. In this capacity he took part in trips of the cadet ship in 1852, 1859 and 1861. From 1853 to 1856 he was also a subaltern officer at the nautical chart archive . In 1863 he was given the character of lieutenant captain , three years later he was given the real rank. In the German-Danish war he took part as first officer of the liner Frederik VI . In 1863, Ravn switched to teaching mathematics at the Royal Military College and continued to teach at the Royal Military College when it was converted into the officers' school. At this time he gained notoriety with scientific treatises, such as his work on degree measurements . In the Den danske Gradmaaling commission ("The Danish degree measurements"), headed by Major General Georg Zachariae . In 1868 he became a captain , in 1873 " kommandør " (roughly frigate captain ) and in 1885 a rear admiral . In 1891 he reached the age limit and received his departure with the character of a vice admiral .
