Steen Andersen Bille (born December 5, 1797 in Copenhagen , † May 2, 1883 ibid) was a Danish naval officer and Minister of the Navy .

Life

Steen Andersen Bille came from the Danish noble family Bille . His father was the naval officer, most recently an admiral , Steen Andersen Bille (1751–1833) the elder, his mother was his wife Frederikke VC Bille, nee. Bornemann (1770-1851). On November 26, 1829, Bille married Caroline Christiane Sophie Frederikke Bülow (1808–187), daughter of Major General Frantz Bülow (1769–1844) and his wife Sophie E. Bülow, born in Copenhagen . In 1809 Bille became a cadet , in 1816 a second lieutenant , and from 1817 to 1818 he was with the frigate Minerva on the Mediterranean and in the Danish West Indies . In 1820 he went into French service with his older brother Ernst Wilhelm, both were assigned to South and North America with the Colosse liner . In 1821 Ernst Wilhelm fell ill and died on the way home from Rio to Denmark. Steen returned to Denmark at the end of the year. In 1823 he became prime lieutenant , from 1823 to 1825 he was again in French service. In 1834 he became a lieutenant captain , in 1841 a captain , in 1848 a Kommandørkaptajn (about a frigate captain ). On January 27, 1852, he became Minister of the Navy in the Bluhme I cabinet . He also kept the post in the subsequent Ørsted cabinet , which ruled until December 12, 1854. In 1852 he was also elected to the Folketing and received two promotions, first to Kommandør (about sea ​​captain ) and then to rear admiral . On February 24, 1860 he was again Minister of the Navy, this time in the Hall II cabinet , which ruled until December 31, 1863. After his final farewell as Minister of the Navy, he was given the character of a Vice Admiral .

In 1846 he stayed in Japan for some time as the captain of the corvette Galathea , which circumnavigated the world from 1845 to 1847 , in order to establish diplomatic relations with Denmark. He wrote a two-volume report about this trip, which was published in 1852.

In 1817 Bille was appointed chamberlain , in 1842 chamberlain , and in 1868 secret conference councilor. In 1828 he was made a knight of the Dannebrog Order , in 1847 a commander, in 1848 a Dannebrog man and in 1858 he was awarded the Grand Cross.
