Otto Fredrik Suenson (born November 19, 1810 in Copenhagen , † November 19, 1888 ) was a Danish naval officer and Minister of the Navy .

Origin and family

Otto Fredrik Suenson's father was the naval officer, most recently " kommandør " (about a frigate captain ), Jean André Suenson (1773–1840), his mother was his wife Anne Cathrine, nee. Lutken (1776-1855). Suenson married on November 25, 1837 in Copenhagen with Signe Ragnhilde Cornelia Dorothea Meyer (born May 29, 1814 in Copenhagen, † December 12, 1891 ibid), daughter of the director of the marine hospice and wholesaler, Johan Didrik Meyer (1774-1838) and his wife Anne Dorothea, b. Hornbeck (1782-1851).

Life

Suenson was 1822 Kadett , 1829 second lieutenant , 1839 First Lieutenant 1847 Lieutenant and 1854 captain . From 1830 to 1831 he was the helmsman on a merchant ship, from 1831 to 1832 he was in the West Indies with the Corvette Fortuna . He then studied mathematics and taught at the Søkadetakademi from 1834 to 1839 . In 1839 he was sent to the United Kingdom , France and the Netherlands for a three-year stay . In the United Kingdom he oversaw the construction of the paddle steamer Hekla . After returning home in 1843, he became an inspection officer at the dock and in shipbuilding. He also joined various technical commissions and was again a teacher at Søkadetakademi. In 1845 he ended his teaching activities and became sub-factory master and in 1848 a real factory master. From 1852 to 1853 he was a member of the Folketing, from 1857 to 1863 a citizen's representative in Copenhagen, from 1859 to 1865 a member of the port council, in 1861 a member of the Imperial Council elected by the king and from 1866 to 1873 a member of the Landsting. From 1867 to 1869 he was Minister of the Navy in the Frijs cabinet .

Awards and memberships

From 1838 to 1839 and from 1843 to 1845 he was chairman of the Søelieutenantselskab. In 1848 he was made a knight of the Dannebrog Order and in 1851 a Dannebrogmann . In 1858 he received the command of the Dannebrogden.
