Christian Giørtz Middelboe (born March 9, 1852 in Ribe , † March 3, 1920 in Frederiksberg ) was a Danish naval officer and Minister of the Navy .

Origin and family

Christian Giørtz Middelboe's father was the customs officer and judicial advisor Christian Middelboe (1805-1887), his mother was his wife Caroline Christiane Giörtz (1831-1875). On January 17, 1878 he married Hedvig Therese Lund (born December 10, 1853 in Ålborg; † May 5, 1924 in Frederiksberg ), daughter of the wine merchant vinhandler Søren Julius Lund (1819–1860) and his wife Betty Jacobine Christiane, née. Tetzen (1829-1922). His brother was the painter Bernhard Middelboe .

Life

1867 Middelboe midshipman in the last class of Søkadetakademiet that in 1868 became the Søofficersskole. In 1872 he became second lieutenant and was with the corvette Dagmar in the West Indies and South America until 1873 , in that year he also became prime lieutenant . After this voyage, Middelboe was assigned for various voyages, including with the frigate Jylland to the West Indies from 1876 to 1877. After returning from this voyage, he came to the naval mines , initially as a subaltern officer , from 1885 - with the rank of captain - as chief of the second department of maritime mining. During this service he was in charge of the torpedo ship Esbern Snare from 1881 to 1889 , which was used to test and launch torpedoes. From 1891 to 1899 he was the leader of Løvenørn . In 1899 he was appointed " Kommandør " (about frigate captain) in 1899 . In 1898 he was chief of the cruiser Heimdal in Iceland . From 1899 to 1900 he was chief of staff of the floating defenses of Copenhagen . From April 27, 1900 to July 24, 1901 he was Minister of the Navy in the Sehested cabinet . From 1902 to 1908 he was then head of Copenhagen's floating defenses several times. In 1911 he was appointed rear admiral . When he had reached the age limit, he took his leave in 1914. From 1918 to 1919 he published his memoirs.
