Carl Edvard van Dockum (born February 29, 1804 (after entry in the church book on March 6) in Copenhagen , † January 29, 1893 in Helsingør ) was a Danish naval officer and Minister of the Navy .

Life

Van Dockum's father was the naval officer, most recently Vice Admiral , Jost van Dockum (1753–1834), his mother was his wife Suzanne C. van Dockum, nee. Holm (1755-1844). On April 11, 1840 van Dockum married in Copenhagen Louise Sophie Caroline Bauditz (1809–1878), daughter of the army officer, most recently Major General , Christian Fürchtegott Bauditz (1778–1849) and his wife Caroline Bauditz, nee. Holm (1787-1863).

In 1810 van Dockum came to Antwerp with his father and stayed in France for a few years . In 1813 he returned to Denmark and in 1815 became a cadet , in 1821 a second lieutenant , decorated with the Gerners Medalje and the Kongens Æressabel . From 1822 to 1823 he was with the corvette Najaden in the Danish West Indies and then served in the French Navy . 1840 van Dockum Lieutenant 1847 Captain . On October 23, 1848 van Dockum was a member of the Constituent Assembly ( Den Grundlovgivende Rigsforsamling ). On November 25, 1850, he joined the Moltke II cabinet as Minister of the Navy, replacing Captain Carl Irminger . He held this post in the Moltke III and IV cabinets until January 27, 1852. He was succeeded by Steen Andersen Bille . In 1852 van Dockum became a Kommandørkaptajn (about a frigate captain ). In 1863 he was given the post of fleet inspector. Van Dockum joined the Frijs cabinet as Minister of the Navy on August 17, 1866 , but got into conflict with War Minister Waldemar Raasløff on many points and therefore resigned on November 1, 1867, about two years later Raasløff also took over the post of Minister of the Navy. In 1868 van Dockum was made Kommandør (about sea captain) and in the same year admiral .

Awards

In 1823 van Dockum was appointed chamberlain and in 1851 chamberlain . In 1843 he was made a knight of the Dannebrog Order, in 1848 he became Dannebrogsman , in 1853 commander of the Dannebrog Order and in 1860 he was awarded the Grand Cross.
