Henning Christophersen

Henning Christophersen (born November 8, 1939 in Copenhagen , † December 31, 2016 in Brussels ) was a Danish politician . He was Vice President of the European Commission from 1989 to 1995 .

Life

From 1978 to 1979 he was the successor to Anker Jørgensen's Foreign Minister of Denmark, from 1982 to 1984 Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. From 1978 to 1984 he was chairman of the liberal Venstre party. Uffe Ellemann-Jensen succeeded him in this position .

In 1985 he became European Commissioner for Budget, Financial Control and Personnel and Administration . In 1989 he gave up these offices and became Vice-President of the Commission and Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs . His term of office included the conclusion of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, the crisis in the European currency system in 1992 and the accession of Austria, Sweden and Finland to the EU in 1995. In 1995 Christophersen resigned from his EU offices.

He was a member of the European Convention . From December 1998 to January 1, 2007 he was Chairman of the Energy Charter Treaty .
