René Steichen (born November 27, 1942 in Luxembourg City ) is a Luxembourg politician, lawyer and manager. He was a member of the national parliament, state secretary, minister and EU commissioner.

Career

After graduating from the classical grammar school in Diekirch , Steichen studied law at the University of Luxembourg . He then did his doctorate in this subject in Aix-en-Provence and at the Sorbonne , while studying economics and finance at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris . After successfully coping with all of this in 1966, he settled in his hometown as a notary and lawyer.

politics

Steichen belongs to the Christian Social People's Party . He was mayor of Diekirch from 1974 to 1984 . In the election in June 1979 , he was able to obtain a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the first time in the constituency “North” . After successfully defending this in June 1984 , Steichen was appointed to his government by Prime Minister Jacques Santer as State Secretary for Agriculture and Viticulture . In the cabinet reshuffle following the 1989 chamber election , he was promoted to ministerial position: he retained his previous areas of responsibility and was also given responsibility for rural development, culture and research. In December 1992 he gave up his post and his ministry went to Marie-Josée Jacobs .

Instead, the Luxembourg government sent him to the European Commission , where President Jacques Delors gave him the responsibility for agriculture and rural development . After Santer claimed the office of Commission President for himself in 1995, Steichen had to give up his post, as Luxembourg can only appoint one commissioner. The Austrian Franz Fischler succeeded him as agricultural commissioner .

According to politics

After leaving politics, Steichen returned to his old job in Luxembourg. In June 1995 he became a member of the Board of Directors of SES and took over its management in April 1996. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of LuxConnect and Dexia .
