Diekirch ( Luxembourgish Dikrich , Dikrech , Dikkrich or Dikkrech ) is a municipality and city as well as a cantonal and former district capital in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . In addition, Diekirch, together with the communities of Bettendorf , Colmar-Berg , Ettelbrück , Erpeldingen and Schieren, form the core of the Nordstad . Along with the cities of Luxembourg and Esch an der Alzette, this region is the third development pole of the Grand Duchy.

Diekirch is located on the Sauer on the edge of the Luxembourg Ardennes ( Ösling ).

history

Old Laurentius Church

According to ancient sources, the city got its name when Charlemagne relocated Saxony towards the end of the 8th century in order to bring it under his control. One of the centers of these settlements is said to have been in the Diekirch area. In order to convert the pagan Saxons to Christianity, a church was built from which the settlement got its name: Diet-Kirch (Volkskirche). (Too old Franconian thiuda (Old High German: diot das Volk). Þeudō is a reconstructed word from Germanic that plays a role in the etymology of the term German and onomatology .)

In the course of extensive excavations in the 1960s, it could be proven that the so-called Laurentius Church was originally a Roman building. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, remnants of walls and mosaics were found north of the city center . Archaeological investigations in 1992–1993, 1999 and 2008 enabled the reconstruction of a large Roman axial courtyard villa, which stretched over the entire area of the medieval city and was abandoned at the beginning of the 5th century.

Like all other communities in the Ösling, the city had its hardest time in December 1944 and January 1945, when the Sauer Valley formed the southern flank of the Ardennes offensive . The center was almost completely destroyed in heavy fighting.

Since 1955, Diekirch ( Herrenberg , Luxembourgish Härebierg ) has been the only military base of the Luxembourg Army .

Diekircher beer

Diekirch Brewery

Beer brewing has a centuries-old tradition in Diekirch, although there have been various small and medium-sized breweries in the history of the city. Today's brewery was established in 1871 when the old Drüssel brewery was taken over by a newly founded stock corporation. Since then it has been one of the most important industrial companies and employers in the municipality as well as the most popular beer brand in Luxembourg. In 2000, the Brasserie de Diekirch merged with the Brasseries réunies de Luxembourg to form Brasserie de Luxembourg . In 2005 it was incorporated into the Belgian Interbrew group (today: Anheuser-Busch InBev ).

In January 2010, Anheuser-Busch InBev announced the intention to close the brewery in Diekirch and relocate the entire production to Belgium . Massive resistance from customers, the population, trade unions and politicians formed against these plans. A protest rally proclaimed by Facebook mobilized over 1,500 participants, including a number of politicians and trade unionists, who joined the action.

On the day of the announcement, LSAP MP Claude Haagen submitted a parliamentary question to the SME Minister Françoise Hetto-Gaasch , asking whether the Anheuser-Busch InBev company was even allowed to produce “Diekircher beer” in Belgium; or it is an appellation d'origine controlée (controlled designation of origin). The Green MEP Claude Turmes put the same question to the European Commission .

After their first meeting with management, the unions OGBL and LCGB questioned the economic necessity of the announced relocation.

The factory premises are of Saphir Capital Partners (60%), CM (Claude Mack) Participations and the Schneider family bought and then to the Brasserie de Luxembourg Mousel Diekirch leased back . The share capital of Saphir Capital Partners is held in equal shares by Edison Capital Partners , Otago and ECP Holdings, registered in the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean .

The original social plan , which had provided for redundancies, was to be converted into a plan to secure jobs. The brewery is to be rebuilt on a smaller scale in the urban area and the old location is to be used for real estate projects. The transport services will be outsourced , which will cut twenty jobs in the company.

education

There are three secondary schools in Diekirch: the hotel management school Lycée technique hotelier Alexis Heck (LTHAH), the grammar school Lycée classique de Diekirch (LCD) and the mixed school Nordstad-Lycée . The Jos Schmit boarding school is also located there .

The international umbrella organization European Association of Hotel and Tourism Schools , which brings together the hotel and tourism schools , has been located in Diekirch since 2000 .

Diekirch is the namesake of the court district of the same name of the ordinary jurisdiction, which includes the northern cantons of the country.
