Marche Internationale de Diekirch

The Marche internationale de Diekirch (formerly: Marche de l'armée ) is a two-day popular hike that begins every year in May in the Luxembourg city ​​of Diekirch . The organizer is the “Marche Internationale de Diekirch ASBL”.

The march, originally organized by the Luxembourg Army , was first held in 1968. However, at 267, the number of participants was much lower than it is today. Every year between 7,000 and 8,000 people take part in the event. Since it was founded, more than 250,000 hikers have taken part in this largest marching event in Luxembourg.

The event is organized in four categories. To receive an award, at least one day's stage with a length of 20 km must be successfully completed regardless of age and status (civil or military) without a time limit.

All stages start and end in the same place every day ( Al Seeërei square ). The routes run around Diekirch. Numerous spectators follow the spectacle. The event is logistically supported by the Luxembourg Army . The march is part of the marching events of the International Marching League (IML) .

Awards

After successfully completing the Marche internationale de Diekirch, three different medals and a certificate of attendance are awarded.

  • 1st - 4th successful participation: bronze medal
  • 5th-9th successful participation: silver medal
  • 10-19 successful participation: gold medal
  • from 20th successful participation: gold medal with laurel wreath

From the second participation onwards, a number plate is also awarded, which can be attached to the ribbon of the medal.

Bundeswehr soldiers , enforcement officers of the Federal Police (Germany) and helpers from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief are not allowed to wear the medal as a ribbon buckle or a large badge on their uniform, as it is not a badge of honor donated by a foreign head of state.
