The Nordstad with its six core communities

The Nordstad ( German : Nordstadt) describes a region of Luxembourg around the cities of Diekirch and Ettelbrück , which are committed to joint regional planning and cooperation.

The aim of the Nordstadt is to better coordinate the work of the communities and to shape growth in the sense of sustainable development. The project enjoys high priority in the planning of the IVL . It is intended to make the region the third development pole of the Grand Duchy, alongside the city of Luxembourg and Esch an der Alzette . In addition, Nordstadt is committed to cooperation in the field of culture and leisure.

Emergence

The idea of a northern city goes back to Adrien Ries , who already pointed out the important role of decentralized economic development in a speech in 1973.

region

Originally only six municipalities were considered in the concept of the north city. These were:

The northern part of the city now covers an area in which around 30,000 people live.

Late night bus

In May 2001, the Nordstadt think tank began to operate a late night bus in rural areas in cooperation with the youth clubs and the municipalities . The concept is similar to that of Luxembourg City, which has been using special "nightlife" buses on weekends for several years. These buses run according to fixed timetables and commute between various discos and events. The organization is more complicated in the country than in the city of Luxembourg, since in the country you always have to go to different places and events.

The buses enable young people from more remote areas to take part in events. Safety also plays a major role, as the bus has reduced the number of drunk drivers, many of whom now use the bus instead of their own car. For clubs, the late night bus has the advantage that it can attract more visitors to their events.

From 2004 the model of the north city was successfully exported to other rural regions, so that now almost every region has its own late night bus. Since January 2006 the association “Late Night Bus Norden asbl” has taken over the coordination for the Late Night Bus Nordspëtzt, Nordstadt and Atert.

The late night buses are mainly financed by the municipalities and since 2005 up to 50% by the Ministry of Transport. The project is also supported by various sponsors.
