Adrien Nicolas Michel Ries (born July 14, 1933 in Bivels near Vianden ; † October 10, 1991 in Ribeauvillé ) was a Luxembourg lawyer , economist and author .

Live and act

After studying law and economics at the University of Leuven , Ries worked from 1958 to 1962 for the Royal Dutch Shell in Luxembourg and Brussels . He then moved to the administration of the European Economic Community as Assistant Head of Cabinet under Lambert Schaus . From 1965 he was responsible for the areas of competitive conditions, price policy and general economic issues in European agricultural policy. From 1979 to 1987 he was the director of the General Directorate for Agriculture. During this time he was appointed head of cabinet to the Luxembourg EC Commission President Gaston Thorn for a short time . He was also a member of several important institutions and associations and, as President, headed the Luxembourg association Îles de Paix .

Ries was primarily responsible for coining the idea of ​​the " Nordstad ", an economic pole in the north of Luxembourg to complement the metropolitan areas in the center (Luxembourg City) and in the south ( Minette region ). He also appeared as the author of specialist books and numerous articles in well-known specialist journals and several travel journals.

Appreciation

In his home region, the 46 km long stage hiking trail Adrien Ries Nordstad was named after the passionate long-distance hiker.
