Bivels ( Luxembourgish : Biwels ) is a village in the municipality of Pütscheid , Canton Vianden , in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .

location

Bivels lies in a meandering valley of the Our . The river also forms the border to Germany . The village borders the Our Nature Park and to the west of the village is the Our reservoir. About 3 kilometers south of the village is the city of Vianden , to the west of Stolzemburg and on the German side of Keppeshausen . The village is connected to the neighboring towns via the N 10.

General and history

Bivels is a small rural town and was first mentioned in 1332 as Biweiltz . The place name means something like rock or around the river . The place name describes the geographic location of the place.

For a long time, Bivels was considered one of the poorest villages in the area. Between 1954 and 1964, a dam and the Vianden pumped storage plant were built downstream at Vianden in the Our . Due to the damming of the river to the Our reservoir, a large part of the village had to be demolished and rebuilt on an artificially raised plateau. The Holy Cross Church also had to be rebuilt.

A small guest accommodation was set up in 1996 in the no longer used village school.
