Auto runner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An auto runner is a computer game genre and sub-genre of platformer , skill game and racing game , which is characterized by the fact that the game character automatically follows a route without stopping and the player has to avoid obstacles and, if necessary, collect objects. As a rule, the player no longer has the opportunity to return. If, for example, the route is not finite due to procedural generation , it is also referred to as an endless runner or infinite runner . A shooter game in which the course of movement is dictated by the game and the player can only freely control and steer his weapon is called a rail shooter .

Such games are particularly popular on smartphones and tablet computers , as the figure can be easily controlled there with a touchscreen or the tilt sensor . The playing time of a single run is usually short, which increases the replayability and the addiction factor and is intended to appeal to casual gamers in particular. By collecting certain items, the player usually rises in high score tables and can use power-ups . Subway Surfers is the most downloaded Android game, making it the most famous representative of the genre. In addition to the genre term, the word also stands for a game principle that is contained in various games such as Crash Bandicoot and Limbo . The genre is not to be confused with games with sustained fast speeds such as Sonic or parkour games such as Mirror's Edge , where you have to run, but you can move freely in all directions and do this not automatically.

history

MobyGames is the first to list the game 3-D WorldRunner from 1997 for Nintendo Entertainment System and Pepsiman from 1999 for PlayStation . Canabalt from 2009 is the first modern game to be listed. Giant Bomb, on the other hand, names Jump Bug from 1981, Moon Patrol from 1982, Sonic 2 from 1992 and the first Sega Master System version from Aladin as the first genre representatives. The genre is inspired by the platformer games of the 1980s and 1990s. Other pioneers in the genre are Aztec Challenge from 1982 and the Hugo game series (from 1994).
