Mirror's Edge (dt. Edge of the mirror ) is a computer game , which of Digital Illusions CE for PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and for Windows was developed. On November 11th, 2008 it was released for the two consoles. On January 12th, 2009 a version for Windows was released, which contains support for Nvidia PhysX . Mirror's Edge is a mixture of action-adventure , platforming and first-person shooter , and the manufacturer advertises it as an action-adventure.
Mirror's Edge has already sold 2.5 million times. The game is also available for iOS and Windows Phone 8 .
Background story
The setting of the game is a conformist - dystopian city, in which communication and the flow of information are monitored by a totalitarian regime. For the transmission of information to escape the supervision of the government, therefore, so-called Runner (dt. Messenger runners), including the protagonist Faith heard commissioned.
When a popular politician is murdered in town, Faith and her sister Kate are caught in the crosshairs of the police. While Kate is arrested, the protagonist Faith manages to escape. In the course of the story she tries to unravel the circumstances and relieve her sister.
Gameplay
The core element of the game is the agile movement in and on the buildings of the city in the style of the urban sport parkour . But fights are also part of the game - Faith has mastered various hand-to-hand combat techniques. Furthermore, opponents can be disarmed and weapons can be picked up. However, wearing them restricts mobility and speed depending on the type and size. With the so-called runner vision , relevant objects (for example bars and doors) are marked in red.
The game is played in the first person perspective , in which head and body movements influence the field of vision and the perception of the environment. No so-called HUD is used. The player looks at the game world through the eyes of the protagonist without being able to see displays for life energy, ammunition and the like. An indicator of bad health is the desaturation of the entire picture. Only the time-trial and speed run mode in Mirror's Edge are an exception regarding a HUD: In the Time Trial mode displays for current speed, check point times, best time and since the start elapsed time are integrated in speed run mode, the fastest time and the time elapsed since the start is displayed.
Mirror's Edge uses the Unreal Engine 3 , which has been expanded with Beast (light and shadow calculations) and PhysX (physics calculations).
Game expansions
On February 22nd, 2009 the fee-based Pure Time Trial Map Pack was released for consoles and PC , which contains some additional time trial levels. These are set in a fantasy world and without any story. The expansion was developed for all systems, with the PlayStation 3 version containing an additional card free of charge.
In addition, a two-dimensional Flash game called Mirror's Edge 2D was released by game developer Borne Games in 2008 , which was recognized as an official game by Electronic Arts. Unlike the original game, this one is played in the third person perspective.
In 2010, an iPad version of the game was released, and an iPhone version is also available.
continuation
Electronic Arts announced a successor to the game in 2009, which in turn would be developed by DICE. In February 2011, reports came up that the second part had been discontinued. In March of the same year it was announced that a possible successor was still in the creative process. The sequel was officially announced at E3 2013 , but without a set release date. On June 9, 2015, the name of the sequel, Mirror's Edge Catalyst , was announced. The closed beta test started in April 2016. On June 7 (North America) and June 9, 2016 (Europe), Catalyst was released for Xbox One , PlayStation 4 and PC ( Origin ).
