Icy Tower is a platformer - computer game from Free Lunch Design (FLD). It is available as freeware for Microsoft Windows and for a fee for Mac OS and iOS . The principle of the game is to let the main character Harold the Homeboy climb a tower by jumping at different heights.

Gameplay

The player's task is to steer the pawn up the tower. There are also different broad levels that must be jumped to or, if possible, skipped. It is possible to make jumps without interruption in a so-called combo , each of which skips several levels and thus collects extra points.

The difficulty is increased by the fact that the screen catches up with the character so that it is not possible to remain on a level indefinitely. The speed is increased in steps from 100 to the 1000th level.

As soon as the game character jumps next to the levels and falls down or the game screen catches up with Harold, the round is over.

Reception and dissemination

According to the manufacturer, the game was downloaded more than 20 million times, implemented for mobile phones, as well as for social networks such as Facebook and in the VZnet networks such as studiVZ and schülerVZ .

Modifications

So-called mods (modifications) can be used to change the graphical environment and sounds by the user community. For example, there are mods that adapt the colors of the stones, backgrounds or background music.

It is also possible to integrate your own characters into the game.

Development history

Icy Tower was developed by the Swedish Free Lunch Design Studio in C and the Allegro library . The inspiration was the open source game Xjump .

It was first published on December 22, 2001 as a freeware game for Windows , later porting to other systems followed.

With version 1.4 in 2009 the game expanded noticeably, while previous updates only offered small noticeable or internal changes. The user can choose between Classic Mode and Custom Mode . While the former starts a game with known settings as usual, in the new mode the player himself can change the speed, width of the levels and the gravity of the game. You can also create and save your own profiles.

In November 2012, an official advancement of Icy Tower called Icy Tower 2 was released. This is available for iOS and Android. There are also unofficial Icy Tower ports for the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable portable game consoles by fans.

In the meantime, Free Lunch Design has published further offshoots that are based on the original (Temple Jump, Jungle Jump).
