The Our [ ˈʔu: ɐ̯ ] ( German , Luxembourgish and French Our , German earlier also Ur ) is a 96.1 km long tributary of the Sauer along the border between Germany (D) and the neighboring states of Belgium (B) and Luxembourg ( L). It flows mainly from north to south and meanders in sections.
course
The Our rises in the eastern Ardennes and the western Eifel on Belgian territory. Its source is in the municipality of Büllingen near the Losheimergraben district in the north-northwest and the Eichelsberg ( 653 m ) in the south at an altitude of about 643 m . The federal highway 265 leads past , and the Kyll spring is 300 m north-northwest .
The Our initially flows a little southwest of the B 265, which runs close to the river directly along the German-Belgian border . She passes two Büllingen districts, Hüllscheid and Berterath . Shortly afterwards, it runs a bit in Germany at Verschneid , an Auwer hamlet in Rhineland-Palatinate . Shortly afterwards the Our flows back into Belgium at Schönberg , Atzerath and Alfersteg . From about Weppeler to Auel it runs on the Belgian-German border and then again in Belgium at Weweler . Then the Our flows again on the state border between Stoubach (B) and Stupach (D) and past Welchenhausen (D) and Oberhausen (B). It then runs through Belgium for the last time near Peterskirchen-Ouren .
From the European monument at the border triangle Belgium-Germany-Luxembourg between Ouren (B), Sevenig (D) and Lieler (L), the Our runs almost entirely on the German-Luxembourg border. It flows past Dasburg (D) and Rodershausen (L), Ober- and Unter- (L) as well as Überisenbach (D), Gemünd (D), Stolzemburg (L) and Keppeshausen (D). It then runs at Biwels (L) through the lower basin of the Vianden pumped storage plant, also known as the Ourtalsperre, and then - a short stretch only in Luxembourg - through Vianden .
On its last kilometers, the Our flows again on the German-Luxembourg border, passing Roth an der Our , Gentingen , Ammeldingen (all D) and Hoesdorf (L). Then it flows into the Moselle tributary Sauer coming from the west at Wallendorf (D) at about 177 m ; Wallendorferbrück (L) lies opposite the mouth to the south .
condominium
The Our is a jointly managed condominium ( joint German-Luxembourg territory ) along the entire route on which it forms the German-Luxembourg border . The sovereign territories that can only be assigned to one national territory begin on the respective bank. In the upper section between Germany and Belgium, the state border is, as is usually the case, in the valley path of the river. The regulation made at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 was confirmed in a border treaty in 1984.
Tributaries
The tributaries of the Our include - with the position of the mouths measured from the Our source:
- Auw (left, at km 9, length 3.6 and 5.93 km)
- Ihrbach (left, at km 21, length 15.9 km)
- Braunlauf (right, at km 23, length 15.4 km)
- Irmisch (left, at km 26, length 4 km)
- Ulf (right, at 30 km, length 17.8 km)
- Irsen (left, at km 67, length 35.5 km)
Tributaries longer than 5 km
A more comprehensive list, which also includes small tributaries, can be found in the list of tributaries of the Our .
Localities
On the Our is the Luxembourg border town Vianden , one of the most important tourist destinations in Luxembourg. In Belgium and in the north of Luxembourg, the Ourtal route is a circular route. The section between Manderfeld (Belgium) and Lieler (Luxembourg), on which you can drive almost entirely along the Our, is particularly worth seeing . Among other things, it leads past Reuland Castle (Ouren) and the European monument at the border triangle Germany-Belgium-Luxembourg.
