Burg-Reuland , named after Burg Reuland , is the southernmost municipality in the German-speaking community in Belgium . It is located in the extreme southeast of the province of Liège south of Sankt Vith in the Our valley .

Community structure

The municipality of Burg-Reuland consists of 26 widely scattered villages and hamlets . The administrative seat of the municipality is Thommen .

geography

The municipality is located in the Belgian Eifel , east of the Plateau des Tailles, the highest point in the Ardennes at 652 m . To the east are the districts of Auel , Steffeshausen and Weweler in the Our valley. The place Reuland with the eponymous castle is located in the valley of the Our tributary Ulf , which drains more than three quarters of the community. The Braunlauf Our tributary rises in the northwest of the municipality and drains the west of the municipality of St. Vith. The southernmost part of the municipality with the village of Ouren forms a triangle with Germany and Luxembourg .

Neighboring communities

In the west, Burg-Reuland borders Gouvy and the southernmost part of the community of Vielsalm . To the north lies the Sankt Viths area. In the east, across the German-Belgian border, are the municipalities of Prüm and Arzfeld, and in the south, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg with the municipalities of Ulflingen (Troisvierges) and Weiswampach .

history

The municipal area was added to the Prussian Rhine Province at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and came to Belgium in 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles . On May 10th, the first day of the western campaign , a group of Brandenburger (a special unit of the Wehrmacht ) tried in vain to thwart the demolition of the Our Bridge in the Maldingen district, prepared by Belgian defenders .

The current municipality of Burg-Reuland was created on January 1st, 1977 through the merger of the former municipalities Reuland and Thommen.

The European monument in Ouren stands in the middle of a small park and was inaugurated in October 1977.

There are a total of 19 churches and chapels in the municipality of Burg-Reuland. With the Peterskirche in Ouren, the St. Hubertus Chapel in Weweler, the St. Stephanus Church in the village of Reuland and the St. Remaklus Church in Thommen, four of them are listed.

nature

The rural municipality is characterized by the Our valley. It is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers and the mainstay of tourism there.

Infrastructure

Shopping in the community is limited to bakeries and slaughterhouses. The community belongs to the catchment area of a shopping center that was built in Schmëtt in the northern tip of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The nearest train station is also in Luxembourg, in Ulflingen ( Luxembourgish Elwen / French Troisvierges ).

From 1889 to 1952 a branch line of the Vennbahn ran through Reuland. It connected Aachen with Luxembourg , so it was of supraregional importance. In Troisvierges it had a connection to the Luxembourg Northern Railway ( railway line Luxembourg – Spa ). It led through a 700 m long tunnel between the Burg-Reuland district of Lengeler and the Ulflingen district of Wilwerdingen. During the Ardennes offensive in the final phase of World War II , the route was interrupted by the German Wehrmacht by blowing up bridges. After that, only the section from Reuland to Troisvierges was driven until the closure. The route was set up piece by piece as part of the RAVeL network for cyclists and hikers, which in turn is a section of the Vennbahn cycle path .
