Blegny (until 2001 the official spelling was Blégny ), Walloon Blegneye , is a Belgian municipality in the Wallonia region . The place is in the Belgian arrondissement of Liège in the province of Liège . Blegny has 13,292 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and an area of 26.07 km².
Blegny is located 5 kilometers (km) east of the Maas valley (French: Meuse ) about 10 km northwest of Liège , 20 km south of the Dutch city of Maastricht and 28 km southwest of the German city of Aachen (all information as the crow flies to the city centers).

history
During the attack on neutral Belgium on August 6, 1914, 19 civilians were shot and 40 houses were destroyed.
In 1980 the coal mining was stopped. The mine is now open to the public as a museum and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage " Important Sites of Walloon Mining " since 2012 .

2.5 kilometers to the west, near the district of Barchon, is a motorway exit of the Belgian A3 / E40 motorway . The nearest long-distance train station is in Liège, where Thalys stops on the Paris - Brussels - Liège - Aachen - Cologne line . The nearest regional airport is near the city of Liège.
