Blegny (until 2001 the official spelling was Blégny ), Walloon Blegneye , is a Belgian municipality in the Wallonia region . The place is in the Belgian arrondissement of Liège in the province of Liège . Blegny has 13,292 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and an area of ​​26.07 km².

Blegny is located 5 kilometers (km) east of the Maas valley (French: Meuse ) about 10 km northwest of Liège , 20 km south of the Dutch city ​​of Maastricht and 28 km southwest of the German city ​​of Aachen (all information as the crow flies to the city centers).

During the attack on neutral Belgium on August 6, 1914, 19 civilians were shot and 40 houses were destroyed.

In 1980 the coal mining was stopped. The mine is now open to the public as a museum and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage " Important Sites of Walloon Mining " since 2012 .
