history
Héristal , the old name, was one of the main Merovingian and Carolingian residences together with the Jupille community . Pippin the Middle , Karl Martell , Pippin the Younger and, last but not least, Charlemagne had close ties to Herstal.
Shortly after taking office, Friedrich II of Prussia visited his Lower Rhine provinces and registered from Moyland Castle in mid-September 1740 old Prussian ownership rights to the Herstal rulership; he emphasized these claims by having 2,000 men from the Wesel garrison occupy the town of Maaseik and collect contributions. There was also the threat of a pillage of Liège in the room. The Prince-Bishop of Liège , Georg Ludwig von Berghes , protested in Paris, at the States General and before the Imperial Court, but no one wanted to intervene. Voltaire , who was just paying his first visit to the king, supported his claims with a public memorandum. Finally the prince-bishop sent his chief steward, the Count of Horion, to negotiate in Berlin. On October 20, 1740, a settlement was reached, the bishop paid 120,000 guilders and had to redeem another 30,000 patacons from 1690 (according to Prussian sources: 260,000 guilders and 60,000 patacons). For that he could keep the glory. The money filled the Prussian war chest for the First Silesian War, which soon began .
At the beginning of the 19th century, the city, like the entire region around Liège, was one of the forerunners of industrialization in Belgium and in continental Europe as a whole and has since been a stronghold of the labor movement .
In 1977 the districts of Liers , Milmort and Vottem were incorporated.
