Chaudfontaine is a municipality in the province of Liège in the Walloon Region in Belgium with a total of 20,800 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and an area of 25.52 km². The individual localities are Vaux-sous-Chèvremont, Beaufays, Embourg and Chaudfontaine.
Chaudfontaine (in English: hot spring ) is Belgium's only health resort with thermal springs . These have been used since 1676. At the beginning of the 18th century, gunsmiths and gunsmiths in Liège moved to rural areas; this initiated the growth of the place. A chapel was built around 1715, which served as a prayer room for the spa guests and the population. In the 19th century, rolling mills and the extraction of limestone , which is abundant in the Vesdre valley, were added.
Beaufays is mentioned as the site of a monastery as early as the 12th century. Embourg was founded around 556 by Saint Monulphus, Bishop of Tongeren . Coal mines, glassworks and hammer mills had been known in Vaux-sous-Chèvremont since the beginning of the 18th century.
