St. Michel Church

Jalhay ( Walloon Djalhé , German (outdated) Galbach ) is a francophone municipality in eastern Wallonia . It is located in the Verviers district in the province of Liège . In addition to Jalhay, the community u. a. from the villages of Charneux, Herbiester, Nivezé, Sart, Solwaster and Tiege.

location

Jalhay is located on the foothills of the Eifel and the Ardennes on the edge of the Hertogenwald . Around half of the municipal area belongs to the Hohes Venn-Eifel nature park and is on average at an altitude of around 400 meters above sea ​​level .

In the north, the municipality of Jalhay borders on Limbourg . The Gileppe dam and the Gileppe form the municipal boundary to Baelen in the east . At Baraque Michel, Weismes borders on Jalhay. The border with Malmedy and Stavelot in the southeast runs along the Vecquée, the old diocese road. The municipalities of Spa , Theux and Verviers follow to the west .

Parish church

The original church of St. Michel was built in 1534 in place of an old chapel. When the church burned down in 1835, construction began in 1840. The consecration of the newly built church took place in 1841. The steeple has a flamed ( twisted or twisted ) shape, which occurs only about a hundred times in Europe.

At the height of the century bridge north of Hockai, the Polleur brook takes the name Hoëgne. A wild and romantic section with cascades (Cascade Leopold II ) and steep paths follows to Solwaster . Other hiking destinations from Solwaster are the Sawe and Statte valleys. In the north of the municipality is the 130 hectare Gileppe reservoir. The Gileppe lion, made of 183 sandstone blocks, sits enthroned on the dam.
