Mont Rigi is an elevation ( 680  m OP ) belonging to the municipality of Weismes in the High Fens , directly at the junction of the N 676 from the N 68.

location

On Mont Rigi, in addition to a restaurant that has now been closed, there is a forestry office (DNF Division Nature et Forêts) and a scientific research and observation station of the University of Liège , which is next to the Hotel Mont-Rigi directly on the Eupen - Malmedy road halfway between Baraque Michel and the “Signal de Botrange ”.

history

A few years after the Eupen – Malmedy road was completed in 1856 at the time of the Prussians and the Rhine Province, an inn and guest house was built in the middle of the then completely unwooded Venn at the fork in the road to Robertville . So people and horses had a resting place on the arduous route.

The founder's son began recording weather data such as temperature, precipitation, barometer reading and wind direction at the end of the 19th century. Based on his information and those from weather stations in Kleve, Arnsberg and Münster, weather reports were created, which were posted in all post offices and government buildings in the Rhineland. It was the owner of Mont-Rigi who introduced skiing in the High Fens even before the Second World War.

The name goes back to the mayor of Weismes , who was responsible for this at the time , who named some places in his community after illustrious names. The Rigi is actually a well-known mountain on Lake Lucerne .

The restaurant has been closed since the end of 2017 and is to be used for another purpose after major renovation.

On the east side of the hill (680 m) is the inactive former outdoor fire position of the Elsenborn military training area.

tourism

Mont Rigi is a tourist hub and starting point for hikes in the High Fens . Here numerous trails begin (z. B. on the wooden pier system on both sides of the main road Polleur-Venn trail, Sentier de la Polleur in whose territory the Hoëgne springs). In winter, Mont Rigi housed a ski rental station.
