Marcello Abbado (born October 7, 1926 in Milan , † June 4, 2020 in Stresa ) was an Italian composer and pianist .

Life

Marcello Abbado was born into a musical family: he was the son of Michelangelo Abbado , brother of Claudio Abbado and father of Roberto Abbado .

Marcello Abbado initially received private piano lessons from Gianandrea Gavazzeni and then studied at the Milan Conservatory with Giulio Cesare Paribeni (1881–1960) and composition with Giorgio Federico Ghedini . He graduated in 1947.

As a pianist, he has appeared on major stages around the world and has worked with Paul Hindemith , Wolfgang Sawallisch and Guido Cantelli , among others .

From 1951 he was appointed lecturer at the Venice Conservatory . Teaching assignments at the conservatories in Bologna and Parma followed. From 1958 to 1966 he directed the Giuseppe Nicolini State Conservatory in Piacenza . He then directed the Gioacchino Rossini State Conservatory in Pesaro from 1966 to 1972, and finally from 1972 to 1996 director of the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan. During this time he was also a member of the board of La Scala in Milan . In 1993 he founded the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi together with Vladimir Delman, of which he was artistic director from 1993 to 1996.
