The Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan is the largest music academy in Italy .

history

Founded by a royal decree of 1807 in Milan , then the capital of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy , it was opened soon after in the building complex of the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Passione . In the first year, 18 female and male students were accepted.

In June 1832, the then 18-year-old composer Giuseppe Verdi was refused admission to the Conservatory to train as a pianist because of "incorrect hand position without the possibility of correction" and exceeding the maximum age (it was 14 years at the time). Shortly before his death, the music school was named after him.

The music academy also includes the La Sala Verdi concert hall and the Biblioteca del Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi library .

  1. It is assumed, however, that in reality, due to lack of space, no students were admitted who did not come from Lombardo Veneto . See Giuseppe Verdi's 200th birthday ( memento of August 8, 2017 in the Internet Archive ) in: Mondo Italiano nel Mondo ; Retrieved June 29, 2017
