The Conservatory "Luigi Cherubini" ( Italian : Conservatorio di Musica "Luigi Cherubini" ) is a music academy in Florence .

In Florence, one of the most important cities in the history of music, there have always been various music schools over the centuries. Today's conservatory, which is named after the composer Luigi Cherubini (1760–1842) who was born in Florence , can trace its origins back to the end of the 18th century. By decree of 1784, the Grand Duke Leopold of Tuscany united the various arts under the umbrella of an Academy of Fine Arts ( Accademia di Belle Arti ), which also included music. This resulted in an independent Istituto Musicale in 1849 , the first director of which was Giovanni Pacini (1796–1867). From 1860 it existed as the Royal Music Institute ( Regio Istituto Musicale di Firenze ) under the direction of Luigi Ferdinando Casamorata. In 1923, the institute was renamed a Royal Conservatory of Music ( Regio Conservatorio di Musica ) by decree .

The conservatory is located in the historical center of the city not far from the old university and is directly adjacent to the building complex of the Accademia di Belle Arti with its famous gallery. The conservatory's historical musical instruments are also exhibited there.
