The Ferrara Conservatory is named after the city's most famous musician, the composer , organist and harpsichordist Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583–1643), who was born and raised in Ferrara . The beginnings of the conservatory go back to a communal music school ( Liceo o Istituto Musicale ) established in 1870 , which has been called Istituto Musicale Frescobaldi since 1894 . In 1937 the Conservatory moved into the new building erected by Carlo Savonuzzi on the site of the former Saint Anna Hospital, which is still the headquarters.
