history

The Academy was officially founded on September 26, 1769 by Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina , Duchess of Massa and Princess of Carrara . The origins, however, lie with the Accademia di San Ceccardo , which Maria Teresa had established in 1757 at the suggestion of the sculptor Giovanni Domenico Olivieri. Painting, sculpture and architecture were taught there . Olivieri had previously played a key role in founding the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid .
