Decorative art

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The decorative arts is a division of applied arts and the arts and crafts related. It mainly deals with artistic components and characteristics of interior design .

In some cases, the term also includes the decorative design of objects of utility art , and since the turn of the century also the architectural facade design.

The secession or Art Nouveau style , which emerged at the end of the 19th century and fertilized all art movements from painting to handicrafts to architecture with ornamental and floral motifs , had a particularly strong influence on decorative art . The newly founded decorative art magazine , in which Hermann Muthesius and Julius Meier-Graefe published among others, was dedicated to the styles summarized therein .

Typical of Art Nouveau and related directions are the decorative curved lines, flat floral ornaments and the abandonment of symmetries. This was accompanied by the desired amalgamation of "art and life", which can still be found today in everyday art .
