Eugène René Poubelle (born April 15, 1831 in Caen , † July 15, 1907 in Paris ) was a French senior civil servant. His last name has become the name for the garbage can in the French language .

Life

Poubelle, who was born into the middle-class upper class of the city of Caen, completed a law degree with a doctorate. He then worked as a law professor at the universities of Caen , Grenoble and Toulouse . Adolphe Thiers appointed him prefect of the Charente department in April 1871 . He later worked as prefect of the Isère , Corse , Doubs and - from 1883 - Seine departments. The Seine department then comprised the city of Paris including the suburbs .

In order to improve the hygienic conditions in Paris, Poubelle issued a momentous decree on November 24, 1883, which obliged the homeowners to provide their tenants with lockable containers for their household waste . Glass, broken porcelain and oyster shells had to be collected separately from other household waste. This decree initially met with resistance from the Parisian population. The city council of Paris passed a statement on February 22, 1884, calling on Poubelle to make minor changes to his decree. Poubelle signed the final decree on March 7, 1884. Another decree to improve hygiene, which obliged homeowners to connect their buildings to the public sewer system, was issued by Poubelle in 1894.

From 1896 to 1898 Poubelle was French ambassador to the Holy See . He spent his retirement in the Aude department , the home of his wife Gabrielle Lades-Gout. He was still a member of the Conseil général from 1898 to 1904 . He died in 1907 and was buried in the Grèzes cemetery in Carcassonne .

Aftermath

The name Poubelle has become the common name for the garbage can in the French language. As early as January 16, 1884, the waste bin prescribed by Poubelle was referred to as boîte Poubelle in an article published in the Le Figaro newspaper . In 1890, the name poubelle for a garbage can was added to the encyclopedia Grand Dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle .

A street about 20 meters long with a single house number has been named after Eugène Poubelle in Paris.
