Gianandrea Noseda (born April 23, 1964 in Milano ) is an Italian conductor .

life and work

Gianandrea Noseda studied piano , composition and conducting at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. He perfected his conducting skills with Donato Renzetti , Myung-Whun Chung and Valery Gergiev . In 1994 he won the International Conducting Competition in Cadaqués and was immediately appointed chief conductor of the Orquestra de Cadaqués , which he still directs today.

In 1997 Gergiev appointed him Principal Guest Conductor at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg . He was the first foreigner to hold this position. Since then he has regularly conducted Italian repertoire such as Rigoletto , La Bohème and Ilertrico as well as Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at Mariinski . He led the ensemble on guest appearances in 2000 at La Scala and in Covent Garden (with Prokofiev's War and Peace and Anna Netrebko ). In 2001 he conducted the Mariinsky Ensemble at the Covent Garden guest performance with La forza del destino .

Noseda took on management positions at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Settimane Musicali di Stresa e del Lago Maggiore . In 2000 he became Artistic Director of the Stresa Festival . In 2002 he became chief conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and remained in this position until 2011. In 2002 he also made his debut as opera conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York - with Prokofiev's War and Peace , in the leading roles Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky . Since then he has regularly conducted French, Italian and Russian repertoire at the “Met”. He also made guest appearances in Paris, Vienna and repeatedly at Scala in his hometown.

In 2007 Noseda took over the position of musical director at the Teatro Regio di Torino - an office that he resigned in 2018. In 2008 he directed the new Salome production by Robert Carsen with Nicola Beller Carbone in the title role . At this house he conducted a broad repertoire from Beethoven's Fidelio to Verdi's Simone Boccanegra , Don Carlos and Aida to Stravinski's The Rake's Progress .

The long-term collaboration with Anna Netrebko led to the 2013 album Verdi with the Orchestra del Teatro Regio di Torino , which became a number one hit in Austria and was among the top 10 in Germany for two weeks. In August 2015 Noseda made her debut at the Salzburg Festival on the podium in the successful production of Verdi's Il trovatore , staged by Alvis Hermanis , sung by Anna Netrebko and Ekaterina Semenchuk , by Francesco Meli and Artur Ruciński .

Noseda has been working regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra since 2008 , with numerous concerts in the London Barbican Center , but also on tour in Aix-en-Provence and New York. In 2016 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. Also in 2016, he was elected Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC - a position he took on in 2017. In 2021 he will also become General Music Director at the Zurich Opera House .

In the concert hall, Noseda enjoys working with the pianist Andrea Lucchesini and the violinist Sergei Chatschatrjan . Together with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Chandos , he recorded a number of works by Prokofiev, as well as Dallapiccola (including the world premiere of his Partita ), Dvořák , Liszt , Karłowicz , Casella , Shostakovich , Rachmaninow and Respighi .
