Rotterdam's Philharmonic Orcest
The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra ( German Philharmonic Orchestra Rotterdam ) is a Dutch symphony orchestra based in Rotterdam . It is considered the second largest orchestra in the Netherlands, after the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra .
history
The orchestra was founded in 1918 by a group of musicians for their own pleasure and with no financial goal. Eduard Flipse, who headed the orchestra between 1930 and 1962, gradually transformed it into a professional orchestra.
Under the direction of Edo de Waart (between 1967 and 1979) and that of his successor David Zinman (1979–1982) the orchestra gained international status.
It has been located in the De Doelen concert hall since 1966.
