Yannick Nézet-Séguin (born March 6, 1975 in Montreal ) is a Canadian conductor . He is music director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Canadian Orchester Métropolitain .

life and work

Yannick Nézet-Séguin was born to Claudine Nézet and Serge Séguin. At the age of five he received his first piano lessons and at nine he became a member of the vocal ensemble Choeur Polyphonique de Montréal . In 1995 he began studying piano, composition and conducting at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec. At the same time he was a student of Joseph Flummerfelt and Hermann Max at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton . From 1997 he was also tutored by Carlo Maria Giulini . Giulini became Nézet-Séguin's "artistic father figure" and had a formative influence on his further professional development.

Since 2000, Nézet-Séguin has been Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Canadian Orchester Métropolitain, a position for which he signed a lifetime contract in 2019. After guest appearances at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, he was also chief conductor there from 2008 to 2018, and has been honorary conductor since 2018. In March 2007 he worked for the first time with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and was its elected first guest conductor from 2008 to 2014.

Nézet-Séguin's debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2008 with Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod attracted international attention . Since then he has regularly conducted the most important orchestras, "from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra " and has made guest appearances at the most important concert halls, "from La Scala in Milan to the Covent Garden Opera in London ".

Nézet-Séguin has been Music Director of the renowned Philadelphia Orchestra since 2012, having been Music Director-designate there since the 2010/11 season. His contract was extended to 2022 in January 2015. In September 2018 he also became music director of the Metropolitan Opera, which had prematurely separated from its chief conductor James Levine . He has been involved in the “artistic planning of the opera house” since spring 2016.

The Konzerthaus Dortmund was from autumn 2013 Nézet-Séguin "European [r] fixed point". For three seasons he was engaged as an exclusive artist for The Yannick Experience series .

His partner is the violinist and choir director Pierre Tourville. Nézet-Séguin “lives in Montreal, Philadelphia and Rotterdam” and from 2016 “also in New York”.
