Orchester Métropolitain
The Orchester Métropolitain (OM) is a symphony orchestra based in the Canadian city of Montreal . Most of the performances take place in the Place des Arts cultural center , but also in other halls in the region. It is one of the two house orchestras of the Opéra de Montréal .
The orchestra was founded in 1981 by graduates of the Montreal Conservatory, in competition with the already established Orchester symphonique de Montréal . It was initially called Orchester Métropolitain du Grand-Montréal and took its current name in 1986. In the same year a choir was added, which has accompanied the musicians ever since. In 2005, the first international tour took place in the United States .
The aim of the orchestra is to promote classical music among young people and to introduce Canadian performers to a large audience. Every year 70 concerts are held, which are attended by around 200,000 spectators. In addition, matinees are held in schools and concerts in parks and metro stations . Guest musicians are regularly invited, for example Diane Dufresne , Denis Gougeon , Michel Longtin and John Rea . So far the orchestra has recorded over two dozen sound carriers.
