Place des Arts is a major cultural center in Montreal . It is located in the northeast part of the city center between Boulevard De Maisonneuve and Rue Sainte-Catherine , in the middle of the Quartier des Spectacles .

The building complex includes six event halls with almost 8,000 seats. These are the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier (2982 seats), the Maison symphonique de Montréal (1900 seats), the Théâtre Maisonneuve (1453 seats), the Théâtre Jean-Duceppe (755 seats), the Cinquième Salle and the Studio-théâtre . There are also foyers, practice rooms, studios, offices and shops. Also part of the complex is the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal , which specializes in contemporary art .

The event halls enable the implementation of a wide variety of cultural performances such as opera, concerts, choirs, ballet, theater or film screenings. The Orchester symphonique de Montréal , the Orchester Métropolitain , the Opéra de Montréal and the Grands Ballets Canadiens have their headquarters in the Place des Arts . In summer, numerous open-air concerts take place on the forecourt as part of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal .

Place des Arts has an underground car park with 1,000 parking spaces. The building complex is also connected to the Montreal underground city , with connections to the Place-des-Arts subway station , various UQAM faculties and the Desjardins complex .

history

Initiated by Mayor Jean Drapeau , who was known as an opera lover, the George-Étienne-Cartier Corporation was founded in 1955 . The aim of this association was to establish an important cultural center with international reach in Montreal. The architects Affleck, Desbarats, Dimakopoulos , Lebensold, Michaud & Sise presented the project in 1959, and construction work began two years later. The opening of the first construction phase took place on September 21, 1963 with a concert by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, conducted jointly by Wilfrid Pelletier and Zubin Mehta . The Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal was added in 1992, the last addition to date was the Maison symphonique de Montréal in 2011.
