Dimitri Dimakopoulos ( Greek Δημήτρης Δημακόπουλος , born September 14, 1929 in Athens ; † November 7, 1995 in Montreal ) was a Greek-Canadian architect who significantly shaped the cityscape of Montreal with his buildings.

biography

Dimakopoulos grew up in Athens and studied there until 1948. He then continued his studies at the architecture faculty of McGill University in Montreal. Meanwhile he was awarded the Anglin-Norcross Prize and the Hobbs Glass Prize. His main focus was on public theaters and stages, his final thesis in 1954 was the basis of the winning competition design for the Queen Elizabeth Theater in Vancouver . In 1955 he and colleagues founded the ARCOP office (Affleck, Desbarats, Dimakopoulos, Lebensold, Michaud, Sise. Today: ARCOP Group) . The office was awarded the contract to build Place Ville-Marie in Montreal, which is now the city center. Within a few years, the office developed into one of the most important architecture firms in Canada with participation in numerous important projects (e.g. Expo 67 , Montreal, 1963–67; Place Bonaventure, Montreal, 1964–68; National Arts Center, Ottawa , 1964– 69).

In 1967 Dimakopoulos began a long-term collaboration with the Planning Department of the City of Calgary , and in 1968 founded "Dimakopoulos and Associates / Dimitri Dimakopoulos & Associés". Now his designs were less radical, he got orders for town planning for the centers of Winnipeg , Quebec City , Hull and Hong Kong . In 1991/92, in collaboration with Lemay and Associates, he designed the 1000 de La Gauchetière office tower , which is still the tallest building in the city of Montreal.
