Carlo Maria Giulini
Carlo Maria Giulini (born May 9, 1914 in Barletta , Barletta-Andria-Trani Province, † June 14, 2005 in Brescia , Lombardy ) was an Italian conductor .
Life
Giulini grew up in Bolzano and therefore spoke fluent German in addition to Italian. From 1930 he studied violin , composition and conducting at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome , then became a violist and switched to conducting in 1944.
From 1946 to 1951 he conducted the RAI radio orchestra in Rome and from 1950 the newly founded RAI orchestra in Milan . He made his operatic debut in Bergamo in 1948 with Verdi's La traviata , and made his debut at La Scala in Milan in 1952 with La vida breve ( The Short Life ) by de Falla . From 1953 to 1956 he was de Sabata's successor at Scala , where he was a. a. 1954 on the famous Traviata - staging with Maria Callas , under the direction of Luchino Visconti involved. In 1955 he made his US debut in Chicago. Since 1956 he worked with no permanent orchestra, often with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. From 1967 he concentrated on symphony concerts, especially the works of Bruckner , Brahms and Mahler . Not until 1982 did he conduct another opera, Verdi's Falstaff , in Los Angeles .
From 1969 to 1978 he was principal guest director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , from 1973 to 1976 as successor to Josef Krips chief conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra , from 1978 to 1984 of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1998 he stopped conducting. His life's work includes numerous recordings, including with the Vienna Philharmonic , of which Giulini was one of the most important conductors for many years. Giulini had been an honorary member of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna since 1976 .
After a long illness, Giulini died on June 14, 2005 in Brescia and was buried on June 16 in the family chapel in Bozen .
