from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Gustav Mahler Society is an association that is dedicated to the scientific publication of the works of the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler and documents his biography and spheres of activity as well as Mahler's reception.

history

The society was founded in 1955 on the initiative of the Vienna Philharmonic , Bruno Walter was elected first honorary president , Erwin Ratz was the first president and Alma Mahler was accepted as an honorary member .

First of all, a library and archive were set up on the subject of Mahler and his environment, based on the Beethoven House in Bonn. In addition, the primary tasks planned were the complete critical edition of Mahler's works and the establishment and maintenance of the memorials. From 1956 subsidiary companies were founded internationally, for example in the Netherlands , Sweden , the USA , Japan and Germany . From 1957 onwards, the company initiated and financed the installation of numerous memorial plaques in places where Mahler lived or worked. In 1960, on the occasion of Mahler's 100th birthday, the first volume in the complete edition came out, the 7th Symphony. From 1963, further volumes of the complete edition appeared successively (Fourth, Fifth, Sixth Symphony, Adagio from the Tenth, Das Lied von der Erde). In 1967 Leonard Bernstein received a gold medal for his services to Mahler. Kurt Blaukopf - head of the library and archive - published his fundamental study Mahler or the contemporary of the future in 1973. Gottfried von Eine succeeded Erwin Ratz as president of the society, Karl Heinz Füssl directed the publication of the complete edition.

In 1976 the company moved into the premises at Wiedner Gürtel 6. Herta Blaukopf and Knud Martner published editions of Mahler's letters and documents. After Füssl's death in 1992, Reinhold Kubik became head of the complete edition, since then Renate Stark-Voit has worked as a collaborator , and Thomas Hampson was appointed vice-president.

The notices published by the society became a scientific journal, edited by Erich Wolfgang Partsch . In addition to various other initiatives and exhibitions, the company developed a permanent exhibition dedicated to Mahler for the Grand Hotel Toblach cultural center .

Peter Revers has been President of the Society and Barbara Boisits Vice-President since July 2019 . Other board members are Federico Celestini , Stephen Hefling , Morten Solvik , Renate Stark-Voit and Christian Utz . Thomas Hampson acts as artistic advisor. The New Critical Complete Edition (NKG) of Mahler's musical works is edited by Renate Stark-Voit (who has also been editing the Mahler-Nachrichten since 2015 ), Stephen Hefling and Morten Solvik.
