history

The Münster Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1919, is one of the main pillars of Münster's musical life and quickly gained national attention in its eventful history. Famous composers such as Hans Pfitzner (1921) or Richard Strauss (1924) repeatedly accepted the invitation to conduct his own works, later Paul Hindemith (1955). The orchestra consolidated its position as the most important cultural institution in Münster under the general music directors Reinhard Peters (1961–1970), Alfred Walter (1970–1985) and Lutz Herbig (1985–1992). In 1992 Will Humburg was appointed General Music Director, from 2004 to 2007 Rainer Mühlbach held this position, which Fabrizio Ventura had held since the 2007/08 season. He was replaced by Golo Berg for the 2017/18 season.

Numerous prizes and awards honor the work of the Münster Symphony Orchestra, including the Gustav Mahler Medal and the award for the best annual concert program in Germany from the German Music Publishers Association (1993). In June 2013, the Münster Symphony Orchestra and Fabrizio Ventura were invited to the Sala Verdi in Milan.

There are CD recordings of Anton Bruckner's 9th Symphony, various children's concert programs and works by the composers Klöffler, Gluck and Graun (“Paper. Sounds”). In 2016 the work MANFRED by Robert Schumann with the text by Lord Byron was released on CD by Ars Production.
